Every home should have: Something unexpected

Don't you like it when you go into a place and for some reason you can't immediately explain everything feels just right!  Besides making you feel comfortable and at ease, that interior also keeps you wanting to see more and stay longer.  The unexpected touches throughout makes the whole experience more engaging.  I love a bold elaborate mirror on a white wall, an unusual and uncommon chair or even simply a particular choice of wall color. Enjoy!

Every home should have: Well designed closets

Eva Jeanbart-Lorenzotti closet
I came back home to find few of my clothes with mold, eek! and two of my bags with the leather all cracked up and peeled off.  All consequences of closet-enemy-number-one, humidity.  At the moment my walking closet is empty, doors opened and my summer clothes are all piled up on the guest bedroom - not too stylish if you ask me.   This whole unfortunate experience made me think that yes, walking closets are very convenient and beautiful but as with any type of closet the most important part is the planning.  Good insulation, proper ventilation, enough room between clothes and last but not least lighting!  It's a good thing to think about if you are currently building your home.  Enjoy!

Every Home should have: Beautiful Vignettes

Beautiful and well accomplished vignettes throughout the house are not only pleasant but I believe necessary as well.  They encompass a big chunk of the details and if you think a home is complete without them, think again.  It's like in fashion where an outfit is never complete without accessories.  I noticed vignettes turn out better when they carry out a theme: whether related to a period time, mood, color scheme, or all of the above.  Enjoy!

Every home should have: Beautiful Doors

Amazing door at Bruno Frisoni Moroccan home
I have posted before about how important and sometimes overlooked doors are in interiors.  It's a great opportunity to make a room or a home a carefully thought through beautiful space.  From painting faux moldings to simply wallpapering to a more expensive alternative of replacing them anyone can enhance its look and value.  Enjoy!
Below, Jean Luis Deniot did what it seems fretwork above the doors in this beautiful space in India.

Sometimes with only paint, preferibly in a contrasting color, would make an impact.

Paint faux moldings.

I know that not everybody get to have doors like this one but it is a great source of inpiration.
Sliding doors are not only functional but they can be sculptural as well.

Love this big farm door.

This is such a great idea.  The door below leading to the kitchen is covered with mirror and wood molding.
Covering a door with fabric or wallpaper is a pretty good alternative as well.

Every Home should have: Sconces

Colin Radcliffe
Sconces have become more than just a simple object with a main purpose to illuminate spaces a long time ago.  It has become many things in one, a sculpture, a wall art; a strictly decor item.  Since such is its evolution many times its selection is based as being part of the details.  As much as part of the final touches that complement the room nevertheless, a wall sconce is an item with function and form.  As each of these rooms illustrates indoor wall lighting can be used for many different aim.  Ejoy!
Too high of a ceiling and too big of space? add intimacy by installing lighting on the shared walls.

In this bedroom the sconces don't take away from the bookcases and neutral tones, their most important purpose is function.
In the home of Gallerist David Gill a Serge Mouillie double swing arm sconce blends in with the industrial kitchen.  It also contrasts with the iron window frames.
Love this three arm sconce.  Its effect is more of a sculpture in itself to the white plain walls.
In this marblelous bathroom the sconces are barely noticeable, I assumed to not fight against the marble and golden mirror. by Kelly Wearstler via Lonny
